About a quarter of the more than 30 million Americans who have diabetes are unaware of their condition. And 90% of the 86 million with prediabetes are unaware, too.
Considering the complications and comorbidities associated with diabetes, it’s highly risky not to seek out a diagnosis or to do something about it. According to this Healthline article, the risks for the following diseases and incidents increase as diabetics age:
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy)
- Vision loss
- Kidney disease
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Peripheral artery disease
